DENVER'S WASTE NO MORE MANDATE: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW.
Enforcement begins September 1, 2026. Denver is leading with education first, but compliance is required by law. Here's what applies to you, what's required, and how to get ahead of the deadline.
WHAT IS WASTE NO MORE?
The plain-English version.
Waste No More is a Denver ordinance passed by voters in 2022 that requires most commercial properties to provide recycling and composting services in addition to trash. The goal is to divert organic waste and recyclables out of Denver's landfills and into compost facilities and recycling streams.
After several years of phased rollout and education, full enforcement begins September 1, 2026. From that date forward, covered properties must have active organic waste collection in place>not just plans, not just intentions. A real, working compost service.

HOW ENFORCEMENT WORKS
Denver leads with education. But the deadline is real.
EDUCATION
Inspectors start with outreach and helping businesses understand what's required.
→
TECHNICAL SUPPORT
Properties that aren't compliant get guidance and time to fix the gaps.
→
FINES AS LAST RESORT
Penalties are reserved for properties that refuse to comply after repeated outreach.
THE REAL RISK ISN'T THE FINE.
It's being caught unprepared when inspectors show up. Properties that get ahead of the deadline avoid the scramble, the stress, and the cost of last-minute compliance. The businesses that wait pay more later, every single time.
